Thomas and John Knoll, American brothers, invented Adobe Photoshop in 1987. The brothers' work on the program began when Thomas, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, wrote a program to display grayscale images on a monochrome display. John, who worked at Industrial Light & Magic, suggested that Thomas turn the program into a full-fledged image editing program. In 1988, the brothers collaborated on the program and sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated
